Tinubu Approves ‘Nigeria First’ Policy, Mandates Priority for Local Industries in Government Procurement
President Bola Tinubu has approved the sweeping “Nigeria First Policy,” directing all federal ministries, departments, and agencies to give top priority to Nigerian goods, services, and know-how in every government procurement, marking a major shift in the nation’s economic policy.
President Tinubu’s administration has formally adopted the Renewed Hope Nigeria First Policy, a new framework that mandates all government procurement activities must prioritize Nigerian industries and locally produced goods and services.
The policy, approved by the Federal Executive Council and soon to be backed by an executive order, requires the Bureau of Public Procurement to revise guidelines to favor local manufacturers and service providers.
No foreign goods or services that are already being produced locally will be procured without a clear and justified reason, and any breaches will attract sanctions, including contract cancellations and disciplinary action.
The move is designed to empower local industries, create jobs, reduce dependency on imports, and place Nigeria at the center of all public spending and economic decisions, mirroring the “America First” doctrine seen in the United States
