US Vetoes UN Security Council Resolution Demanding Gaza Ceasefire and Aid Access
The United States has vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution that called for an immediate and permanent ceasefire in Gaza and unrestricted humanitarian aid access.
The resolution, supported by all 14 other council members, aimed to halt ongoing fighting and address the worsening humanitarian crisis in the region.
The US said it vetoed the measure because it did not condemn Hamas for its October 2023 attack on Israel or require the group to release hostages as a precondition for a ceasefire.
Acting US Ambassador Dorothy Shea argued that the resolution would undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts and could embolden Hamas.
Israel maintains that any ceasefire must be conditional on the release of hostages and the removal of Hamas from Gaza.
This marks the fifth US veto of a Gaza-related Security Council resolution since the conflict escalated in October 2023.
