Canada’s PM Announces Resumption of Trade Talks with US Following Scrapped Tech Tax Plan

Prime Minister Mark Carney has confirmed that trade negotiations between Canada and the United States are back on track after Ottawa abandoned its controversial proposal to tax American technology companies.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced today that Canada and the United States have resumed trade talks, signaling a potential thaw in bilateral relations.

The move comes after the Canadian government decided to scrap its plan to introduce a new tax targeting major American technology firms, a proposal that had sparked tensions between the two neighboring countries.

Carney emphasized the importance of maintaining strong economic ties with the United States, Canada’s largest trading partner. “We believe it is in the best interest of both nations to work collaboratively and address any issues through dialogue rather than unilateral measures,” Carney stated during a press conference in Ottawa.

The decision to drop the tech tax was welcomed by American officials, who had warned that the policy could lead to retaliatory measures.

Industry representatives on both sides of the border have also expressed relief, noting that the resumption of trade talks could help resolve outstanding disputes and foster greater cooperation in the technology sector.

Both governments have agreed to continue discussions in the coming weeks, with a focus on finding mutually beneficial solutions.
