US Senate Votes 60–40 to Advance Bill to Reopen Government

The US Senate voted 60–40 late Sunday to advance a bipartisan bill aimed at reopening the federal government after weeks of partial shutdown that disrupted agencies and delayed federal paychecks.

The vote marks a key step toward ending the budget impasse that has kept much of the federal government closed. The bill, negotiated by a bipartisan group of senators, would fund federal operations through early next year while including temporary provisions to address border security and disaster relief funding.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer urged both parties to unite behind the measure, calling it “a necessary first move to restore government stability.” Several Republican senators joined Democrats in supporting the motion, providing the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster.

House leaders are expected to take up the bill within days, though it remains unclear whether it will gain enough support among hardline lawmakers who have demanded deeper spending cuts.

President Trump has expressed cautious optimism about the Senate’s progress, signaling he would sign a bill that keeps essential services running while longer-term negotiations continue.
