France Weighs Response After Diplomats Detained in Tehran

France is considering “all options” after two of its diplomats were detained by Iranian security forces in Tehran for nearly four hours before returning to Paris on Wednesday, escalating tensions between the two countries.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot described the incident as “very serious” and “premeditated,” warning that it “will not go unanswered.” He said the diplomats were detained without justification, interrogated, had their phones confiscated, and were prevented from contacting the French embassy during the ordeal. One of the diplomats was also allegedly subjected to physical violence.

Barrot condemned the detention as a flagrant violation of diplomatic immunity and confirmed that France has summoned Iran’s chargé d’affaires to explain the incident. He added that the French government is weighing all possible responses, including measures affecting its diplomatic presence in Tehran.

Iran, however, rejected allegations that the diplomats were mistreated. Iranian officials said the pair were questioned after meeting individuals under investigation for security-related matters, insisting the action was justified and denying claims of abuse.

The incident comes amid already strained relations between Paris and Tehran over Iran’s nuclear programme and the detention of French nationals, raising fresh concerns about diplomatic ties between the two countries.
