Tinubu Orders EFCC to Lift Freeze on Osun State Government Accounts
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to immediately return to court to vacate the order freezing the bank accounts of the Osun State Government and to discontinue all related actions.
According to the President, he was “deeply embarrassed” by the timing of the move, stressing that while the EFCC was acting within its legal mandate under a court order, the action could create the wrong public perception.
“Every action taken by an institution of State, especially at the Federal level, is always credited to me as President, even when I may not have had any prior knowledge of the action,” he said.
President Tinubu reiterated his commitment to the independence of anti-corruption and law enforcement agencies, emphasizing that they must continue to operate professionally and without political interference. He noted that he has consistently refrained from directing or influencing the operational activities of the EFCC and other investigative bodies.
However, he described the timing of the account freeze as inappropriate, given that Osun State is just days away from its governorship election.
“Nothing should be done to create the impression that the EFCC or any other federal government agency is being used to influence or interfere with the electoral process,” the President stated.
