Angélique Kidjo Makes History With Hollywood Walk of Fame Star.
Angélique Kidjo makes history as the Beninese music icon becomes the first African musician and first Black African artist to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, cementing a remarkable four-decade career on one of the world's most famous entertainment landmarks. Kidjo unveiled her star on Tuesday, August 18, 2026, during a ceremony on Hollywood Boulevard in Los Angeles. She received the 2,854th star, in the Recording category, at 7011 Hollywood Boulevard.
The moment was bigger than a Hollywood ceremony because for more than 40 years, Kidjo has carried West African sounds onto some of the world's biggest stages, building a musical language from Fon and Yoruba traditions alongside jazz, funk, gospel, soul, Afropop and other global influences. The five-time Grammy winner has released 19 studio albums, with her latest, HOPE!!, arriving in April 2026. Her career has also included collaborations with artists such as Burna Boy, John Legend and Bono, while her work as a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador and through the Batonga Foundation has extended her influence beyond music.
At the ceremony, Kidjo made it clear that she did not see the star as hers alone while speaking about Africa's enormous contribution to global music, saying: “Without us, there’s no music possible on this planet.” Actor Willem Dafoe, who attended as a guest speaker, also celebrated Kidjo's artistry and humanitarian work, describing her as one of the hardest-working women in show business. Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. praised her ability to connect people across generations and cultures.
Hollywood also declared August 18 “Angélique Kidjo Day,” but perhaps the most significant part of Kidjo's achievement is what the star represents. For years, African musicians have travelled outward to find recognition in industries whose biggest institutions were built elsewhere; but with Kidjo's, her name and craft now physically sits in one of those institutions. Her star is embedded on Hollywood Boulevard.
And after more than four decades of refusing to separate global success from African identity, Angélique Kidjo has become the first Black African artist to leave that mark on Hollywood itself.
A star for Kidjo and a milestone for African music.
