Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have made history by qualifying for the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup for the first time ever.
The Nigerian youngsters secured their historic place in the final after overcoming Brazil in Wednesday’s semi-final at the 2026 tournament in Morocco.
The achievement marks a new milestone for Nigerian women’s football, as the Flamingos go one step further than their previous best performance at the competition.
Nigeria’s previous best finish came in 2022, when they reached the semi-finals in India before defeating Germany to claim the bronze medal.
Their journey to the 2026 final has been particularly impressive. After losing their opening group match against Poland, the team bounced back with victories over Puerto Rico and defending champions North Korea before defeating Mexico and Venezuela in the knockout stages.
Captain Azeezat Oduntan played a crucial role in their quarter-final victory over Venezuela, converting an 89th-minute penalty to secure a 1-0 win.
