It's been one year since the invasion of Ukraine by Russia. One year of atrocities, killings and mass destruction not seen on this scale in Europe since the end of the second world war. Few belived Russia would invade their sovereign neighbor of almost 44million people who they share similar history with despite warnings from the US that Russia indeed planned on taking over the country by force.
Russia claimed they were forced to take military action because of NATO's expansion eastward. They pushed the propaganda that Ukraine was being ruled by nazi supporters and wanted to "de-nazify" Ukraine. One year on Ukraine is standing strong, having pushed back the Russians from the outskirts of Kyiv, Kharkiv and the regional capital of Kherson.
The Russian military performance in Ukraine has been abysmal and shocking. Low troop morale, poor planning and logistics arrangements and in-depth corruption has made the mighty Russian military a laughing stock. They've failed to achieve their goals in Ukraine: President Zelensky remains in power, the country still stands strong and united and they've pushed Ukraine further into the influence of the west.
The Russian invasion has also caused some unexpected turn of events the Kremlin didn't bargain for. NATO has been rejuvenated, NATO countries have increased defense spending pledging to meet the 2% defense spending threshold, neighbouring Finland and Sweden have ditched their centuries long neutrality to join NATO and Russian has been placed under crippling sanctions.
One year on and there's no end in sight, the Russians are doubling down and the west keeps pumping weapons into Ukraine to shore up their defenses and get ready for a spring offensive. It is unlikely the war is going to end anytime soon, Putin is determined to get something out of this war and Ukraine is bent on not letting go of any inch of their territory, this makes negotiations all the more difficult and unlikely. Sooner or later both parties might have to come to some form of compromise to end this war before it spreads beyond control.
