Europe Joins U.S. in Urging Iran to Halt Uranium Enrichment Amid Rising Tensions
European leaders are joining the United States in demanding that Iran immediately stop its uranium enrichment program, as international concern grows over Iran’s nuclear ambitions and regional instability.
Foreign ministers from Britain, France, and Germany, along with the European Union’s chief diplomat, met with Iranian officials in Geneva on Friday. Their united message echoed recent U.S. calls for Iran to fully halt uranium enrichment, going beyond previous European positions that allowed some enrichment under strict oversight.
This joint demand follows a recent International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) resolution that found Iran in violation of its nuclear commitments, raising the possibility of further sanctions or referral to the United Nations Security Council.
The talks come amid heightened tensions after Israeli airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites and Iran’s retaliatory missile attacks. While the U.S. has left the door open for diplomacy, it has also warned of possible military action if Iran does not comply. Iran maintains its nuclear program is peaceful and has so far refused to end enrichment entirely.
European officials stress the urgency of renewed dialogue, warning that failure to resolve the issue could lead to further escalation. If Iran does not cooperate, Europe and the U.S. may push for U.N. action later this summer.
