Slovakia Passes Sweeping Amendment Recognizing Only Two Genders
Slovakia’s Parliament has approved a new constitutional amendment defining gender strictly as male and female based on biological sex and imposing wide-ranging social and legal restrictions.
The amendment, which narrowly passed with coalition and conservative support, restricts adoption to married heterosexual couples and bans surrogacy outright.
Sex education in the country will now require parental consent and must conform to “cultural and ethical” norms set by the constitution.
Crucially, the new law asserts that Slovak national legislation takes precedence over European Union regulations in areas such as family, marriage, and ethics, signaling a challenge to EU norms and risking legal disputes at the European level.
