Samsung Set to Supply Foldable Displays for Apple's First Foldable iPhone.

Samsung Set to Supply Foldable Displays for Apple's First Foldable iPhone

The reported partnership highlights one of the technology industry's biggest ironies: Apple's fiercest smartphone rival could manufacture the most important component in its next flagship device.

Samsung Display is expected to become the exclusive supplier of foldable OLED displays for Apple's first foldable iPhone, marking a significant milestone in one of the technology industry's most unusual business relationships.

According to multiple industry reports, Apple has selected Samsung Display to manufacture the foldable panels for its long-rumoured foldable iPhone, which is widely expected to debut in 2026. If the reports prove accurate, every first-generation foldable iPhone could feature a display produced by Samsung, despite the two companies competing directly in the premium smartphone market.

The reported agreement underscores Samsung's dominance in foldable display technology after years of investment in flexible OLED panels through its Galaxy Z Fold smartphone lineup. While several manufacturers produce smartphone displays, industry analysts believe Samsung remains the most experienced in developing foldable screens capable of meeting the durability and performance standards required by Apple.

The decision is particularly notable given Apple's long-standing strategy of diversifying its supply chain. For many of its products, the company sources components from multiple suppliers to reduce dependence on a single manufacturer. Foldable displays, however, remain a specialised technology where few companies have demonstrated the ability to manufacture at scale while maintaining consistent quality.

Apple has reportedly spent years evaluating foldable technology before deciding to enter the market. One of the company's biggest concerns is believed to have been the visibility of the crease that forms where foldable displays bend—a challenge that manufacturers have worked to minimise with each new generation of devices.

Samsung's experience appears to have given it a competitive edge.

Since launching the original Galaxy Fold in 2019, Samsung has steadily refined its foldable technology, improving hinge mechanisms, strengthening ultra-thin glass and increasing the durability of flexible OLED panels. Those developments have helped establish Samsung Display as the market leader in foldable screen production.

While the partnership may appear surprising, it reflects a relationship that has existed behind the scenes for more than a decade.

Samsung has previously supplied OLED displays used in several generations of iPhones, as well as memory chips for Apple's devices. In the early years of the iPhone, Samsung also manufactured Apple's A-series processors before production gradually shifted to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC). Despite competing for smartphone sales worldwide, the two companies have maintained a commercial relationship built around Samsung's component manufacturing expertise.

The reported foldable display agreement is expected to deepen that relationship while creating an unusual business dynamic.

If Apple's foldable iPhone proves successful, Samsung could benefit financially regardless of whether consumers choose Apple's device or Samsung's own Galaxy Z Fold series. Every display supplied to Apple would generate revenue for Samsung Display, illustrating how competition in the technology sector often extends beyond the products consumers see on store shelves.

The partnership also highlights the increasingly interconnected nature of the global technology industry. Many of the world's biggest technology companies compete in one market while collaborating in another. Apple relies on external manufacturers to produce many of its components, while companies that rival one another in consumer electronics frequently work together across semiconductor manufacturing, displays, memory and other specialised technologies.

For Apple, partnering with Samsung could accelerate its long-awaited entry into the foldable smartphone market without spending years building display manufacturing expertise from scratch. For Samsung, supplying displays to one of the world's largest smartphone makers would further strengthen its position as the leading manufacturer of premium OLED panels.

Neither Apple nor Samsung has officially confirmed the reported supply agreement. However, if the partnership materialises, it will represent more than another supplier contract. It will demonstrate how, in today's technology industry, the fiercest competitors can also be each other's most important business partners.
