Trump Says Reciprocal Tariffs Now in Effect, Reshaping Global Trade

President Donald Trump has confirmed that the United States’ new reciprocal tariffs have officially taken effect, ushering in a sweeping overhaul of trade relations with over 90 countries.

The tariffs, which range from 10% to over 100% depending on the country and product, are intended to impose matching duties on nations the administration believes have taken unfair advantage of the U.S. For countries like India, Canada, Brazil, and members of the European Union, rates have jumped significantly, with some facing up to 50% tariffs on key imports.

Trump stated the measures would generate billions in revenue and support American workers and manufacturers. He emphasized that some allies like the UK and Japan have received reduced rates as part of recent negotiations.

Meanwhile, China remains under a temporary truce, with further escalation possible if talks stall.
The sweeping policy shift has sparked lawsuits from importers and state governments, who argue the tariffs could harm domestic businesses and drive up consumer prices.

The White House defends the strategy as a tough but necessary correction to long-standing trade imbalances.
